Oakland, Arkansas History

Oakland began as the community of Orcutt Flatt, a thriving area for trading supplies with a Methodist church and a post office. Around 1900, the name was changed to Oakland, and it became an easy-going community.

In the 1930s, Hawkins Ferry was built to cross the White River near Oakland, which gave people a closer route to the Yellville, the county seat, and towns further west.

With the construction of Bull Shoals Dam in the mid-1940s, the future of the Oakland community was doomed by the rising waters of Bull Shoals Lake. Oakland residents moved their farms, homes, stores and more up the ridge from the rising water, all at Uncle Sam’s expense.

Farms and houses that were moved up the ridge now are resorts and lodges. New homes have been constructed and many are weekend or vacation homes. Tourism, retirement and recreation are the main focus of the Oakland community.
