Sitting on a high, fertile plain in the Ozark Mountain of north central Arkansas’ Baxter County, Gassville is near the world-famous White River. With US Highway 62/412 winding through the center of town, daily commutes to nearby towns and cities are easy drives.

Residents are served by a variety of businesses including grocery and discount stores, service businesses, banks and several restaurants. Living in Gassville affords residents below-average crime rate, low property taxes, four seasons with mild winters, high-speed internet access, low cost of living and a 10-minute drive to a regional hospital and healthcare and two-year college.

Gassville History

Level and fertile grounds and proximity to the White River were reasons families settled in Gassville in the 1840s, as the river provided transportation to market crops. In 1869, 21 families arrived by wagon train from Cherokee County, Ga., and added to the settlement.

In 1876, Pinkney A. Cox and S. E. Denton opened a general store. According to legend, Cox was an incessant talker, and customers referred to him as a “gasser.” When the post office was established in 1878 with Cox as the postmaster, the little town officially was named Gassville. The town later incorporated in 1903 with a mayor/council form of government.

Dr. William Jones Rollins opened Baxter County’s first hospital was opened in Gassville in 1923, expanded in 1937 and closed in 1954. For years, it was the only hospital in northern Arkansas, serving patients as far away as central Missouri.

Gassville had the first and only drive-in theater in the county, which opened in 1952 and closed in 1987. Gassville also was the first town in the United States to receive city water works through the Federal Urban Renewal Program.

  • Gassville in the Park Festival is an annual event on the first Saturday in June. The festival offers artisans, crafters, antique and collectible dealers, food concessions, raffles, public-service and informational booths, music, 5K run, parade, car show and automotive swap meet and children’s area.
