Henderson, Arkansas History

For 40 years, the only way Henderson residents had to get to the county seat of Mountain Home and other towns across Norfork Lake was by ferry operated by the Arkansas Highway Department. For everyone on the east side of the lake, going to work, getting to the hospital, doing county business and shopping depended on the Norfork Ferry, which crossed the lake every 30 minutes. Amazingly, the ferry finished 40 years of crossing the lake without any babies born in transit!

During the years of service, the Norfork ferries – one at Henderson and one at Gamaliel -- carried 15.8 million vehicles at a cost of nearly $15 million. The ferries were meant to be temporary, but it took many years, millions of dollars and much political lobbying before two bridges replaced the ferries.

The Norfork Ferry to Henderson ran its final schedule on Oct. 20, 1983. The Highway 62/412 Bridge opened the following afternoon. Today, only one public ferry remains in Arkansas: The Peel Ferry on AR Highway 125 on Bull Shoals Lake connects Peel and the Missouri state line.
