Salesville History
Salesville was a small, unincorporated settlement until the construction of Norfork Dam. John Sales, the town’s namesake, moved to Arkansas in 1860 from South Carolina and built a home near the Old Salt Trail. His wife, Peggy, made and sold cheese and medicinal salve. A community gradually grew around the Sales property.
A two-room schoolhouse was built around 1900. A post office was established in 1941 and closed in 1953 after construction of Norfork Dam was completed. After Norfork Lake filled, fishing and tourism came to Salesville. The school was consolidated into the Norfork school system in 1952.
The community incorporated in 1968, and today, businesses include a trout fishing resort, rental cabins, a grocery store, a liquor store -- one of the few in northern Arkansas open on Sundays -- and a business that supplies scuba equipment.
Salesville built a city hall in 1991, with a four-bay city garage added in 2001 for the volunteer fire department.
Salesville attractions
- Norfork Dam dams the North Fork River, a tributary of the White River, to create Norfork Lake. It was authorized by Congress in the Flood Control Act of 1938 with construction beginning spring 1941 and completed three years later, while construction of the powerhouse and switchyard was completed in 1949. It’s one of the oldest US Army Corps of Engineers’ multi-purpose concrete structures. The reservoir extends north from the dam site to near Tecumseh, MO., and covers portions of Baxter and Fulton counties in Arkansas and Ozark County in Missouri.
- Norfork National Fish Hatchery was constructed in 19 57 on 43.9 acres below Norfork Dam. Construction and operation of the hatchery comes under the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The hatchery was authorized in 1955, as part of a federal mitigation plan, as US Corps projects across northern Arkansas and southern Missouri changed parts of the White River below the dams into cold-water environments. Species of trout were put into the tailwaters to replace the loss of smallmouth, walleye, and other cool-water species native to the river. Fish production at the Norfork hatchery began in 1957. Hatchery facilities were doubled in size in 1964. The hatchery is home to 2.5 million brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout that are stocked annually into Arkansas waterways. It is also home to Dry Run Creek, touted by many, as one of the most prestigious fishing streams in the country for kids under the age of 16 and the mobility impaired. The hatchery is open to the public. The hatchery is open to the public. Large and small groups can arrange tours. 1414 AR Hwy. 177 S. 870.499.5255. Norfork National Fish Hatchery
